The following is a transcription of a letter from Lee Hendrix, a private in the 1st North Carolina Sharpshooters during the Civil War. Poetry of a different sort.

  1. This delightful note tells us what we (men) already knew. We are ever thoughtful even in extreme adversity!

  2. Indeed. Despite the popular conception of the chaste, "marble man" Civil War soldier, every now and then a letter or court martial record slips through the cracks, reminding us that men of that era really were--to misappropriate a line from Bruce Catton--"flesh of our flesh and bone of our bone."

    Thanks for your comment!
